ExcusesLast week, I was out for a run and I started thinking about all the reasons why I shouldn’t have gone out: I was too tired, my daughter kept me up all night, I should have been home resting while she was at school…the list could go on and on. It got me thinking about how easily I could have let myself off the hook and it started to make me ANGRY!! Yes, that’s right, ANGRY! I set myself a goal to run another half marathon and I could have easily let myself off the hook. So many times I hear people set HUGE GOALS for themselves and suddenly, they are too tired, too bored, they don’t have enough time…ALL EXCUSES!!

I have decided that we live in an excuse driven society…we set our goals and for some reason, we let ourselves off the hook and it’s OK!! WHY is this? It makes me crazy to hear people say, “I’m going on a diet” “I’m going to get in shape” “I’m going to take that trip” “I’m going to build my business” “I’m going to be home with my kids more” “I am going to make more time for me” Then before you know it these same people are suddenly coming up with excuses why they can not do these things. Why is this? I wonder if maybe we set ourselves up with HUGE goals and don’t feel like we are capable, deserving of the lives we want to live, or able to achieve great things, that great things are only for great people and somehow we aren’t part of that elite group of people that can achieve goals?

As I think about this, I am thinking about my 4 1/2 year old daughter. She believes that she can do anything, have anything, is not afraid to try new things or ask continually for things I am constantly saying no to. At what age to we stop believing in ourselves?

As parents it is our job to teach our kids that excuses are not OK, that we can all achieve our goals. We need to lead by example….what are you thoughts? I’d love to hear what you think.
